The summit is about 370 metres (1,214 feet) above sea level.

The Lion's Gate

A Palace in the Sky

Built by King Kashyapa I in the 5th century AD, Sigiriya is one of the most significant examples of ancient urban planning. The king transformed this massive granite outcrop into an impregnable fortress and luxurious palace complex.

The site features three distinct levels - the lower terraced gardens, the mid-level terraces with the famous frescoes and mirror wall, and the summit with the palace ruins. The entire complex demonstrates sophisticated water engineering, with fountains and pools that still operate during the rainy season.

Archaeological evidence suggests Sigiriya was inhabited even earlier as a Buddhist monastery from the 3rd century BC. After King Kashyapa's death, it returned to its religious roots and remained a monastery until the 14th century.

Open daily 6:00 AM - 5:30 PM (last entry 5:00 PM). Best visited at sunrise (7:00 AM) or late afternoon (3:00 PM) to avoid midday heat and crowds.

Physical Requirements

Moderate fitness needed. 1,200+ steps to summit. Not recommended for those with heart conditions, vertigo, or mobility issues. Railings available on steep sections.

Water bottle, sunscreen, hat, comfortable walking shoes, camera. Wear modest clothing (shoulders and knees covered).
